A PIGEON RACE HAPPENS WHEN A GROUP OF PIGEONS ARE TAKEN TO A LIBERATION POINT AND RELEASED. THE EXACT TIME OF RELEASE IS NOTED AND THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY!
THE BIRDS RETURN TO THEIR LOFTS (HOMES) AND ARE CLOCKED IN. BY REMOVING A COUNERMARK (A NUMBERED RUBBER BAND) THAT IS ON THE BIRDS LEG & PLACING IT INTO A SPECIAL CLOCK THE EXACT TIME OF ARRIVAL IS NOTED. BEFORE THE RACE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE LIBERATION POINT AND HOME HAS BEEN MEASURED AND THE TIME IT TAKES A PIGEON TO FLY HOME IS THEN CONVERTED INTO YARDS FLOWN PER MINUTE AND THAT IS THE BIRDS SPEED.

SOUNDS CONFUSING, BUT REALY ITS NOT.

MANY YEARS AGO BEFORE THESE SPECIAL CLOCKS WERE INVENTED THE PIGEON WOULD HAVE TO BE TAKEN TO A CENTRAL MEETING POINT TO TIME IN. THE SPORT HAS EVOLVED AND TODAY BIRDS CAN BE TIMED IN BY THE USE OF ELECTRONIC CLOCKS AND THE USE OF SPECIAL BAR CODED BANDS. THESE NEWER CLOCKS NOT ONLY TIME THE BIRDS IN BUT CAN ALSO CALCULATE THE SPEED OF THE PIGEON.

TO SUM UP, A PIGEON RACE IS A GROUP OF PIGEONS BEING RELEASED BY THEIR OWNERS TO FLY HOME. IT IS NOT THE DISTANCE THE BIRD FLYS, BUT HOW FAST HE FLYS IN YARDS PER MINUTE THAT DETERMINES THE WINNER.
